It can travel through your body as it does not dissolve in water and what helps it travel through your bloodstream is the particles called lipoproteins which has two types – low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). LDL is the bad type that can cause complications.

The foods we eat are responsible for this. These foods that are considered unhealthy and experts have been telling people to avoid as much as possible include:

  • full-fat dairies like whole milk, butter, and full-fat yogurt
  • red meat such as steak, beefroast, ribs, pork chops, and ground beef
  • processed meats like bacon and sausage
  • fried foods
  • baked goods such as cookies and donuts

Excessive consumption of these foods may cause high cholesterol, a condition which is also called hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia.

According to the Mayo Clinic article, this condition doesn’t have any obvious symptoms until you suffer from a heart attack or a stroke. But one way to detect this is through a blood test. The level is too high if your total blood cholesterol level is above 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

The Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) has these healthy measurements for adults:

  • LDL cholesterol: less than 100 mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol: 40 mg/dL or higher
  • triglycerides: less than 150 mg/dL

On the other hand, the HDL is the good type. Food sources of this good type of cholesterol are eggs, shellfish, and lean meat. And if you cannot entirely drop all these unhealthy foods, make sure to limit your consumption and eat in moderation. Make your choices healthy all the time.
