The discharges from a woman is most often a normal and regular occurrence but there are some of this that also shows indication of infection. An abnormal discharge may be yellow or green, chunky in consistency, or foul smelling.

Here are some facts and tips from Doc Liza Ong:

  • The normal discharge is clear and odorless. This is due to the good bacteria that cleans the body. Thus, if you smell something foul, there could possibly an infection or imbalance of bacteria.
    • Tips to stay clean:
      • Take a bath everyday.
      • Wash and change cotton underwear twice in a day to prevent bacterial growth which is causes the bad smell.
      • Use mild soap for your private area. It is best if no fragrance at all because it has a chemical content that destroys the good bacteria.
      • Use lukewarm water instead of hot water as it can cause irritation to the skin.
      • When wiping, start from front to back so the bacteria will go out and not enter the private part.
      • Choose a water-based lotion to apply in the groin area to avoid skin irritation.
      • Don’t apply perfume to your area.
      • Avoid foods with strong smell such as garlic, onion, and chili for their smell will come out through sweat.
      • Also, avoid sugary foods for it can increase blood sugar which can eventually cause yeast infection.
      • Eat yogurt for it has good bacteria and drink lots of water.
      • Trim the hair so that the bacteria with not cling on your private part.
