PREGNANCY SPOTTING – Spotting does not necessarily mean there’s something wrong, but here’s a further understanding of this.

During pregnancy, anything that’s something odd is always alarming not just because of the mother’s health but also for the baby. And as such is bleeding or the spotting. There are many reasons behind this, some cases are serious but some are not.

Accordingly, bleeding during the first trimester is just common. Now, how do you identify bleeding from spots? There’s a big difference. Spotting is light bleeding or drops of blood. In this case, the flow is not too much to already your underwear. And one is bleeding if the flow is greater than drops.

Spotting leaves light traces of pink, red, or dark brown. If there’s bleeding during your second or third trimester, this is the time you would need to see your healthcare provider.

In a 2010 study, 1 in 4 pregnant women experienced bleeding during the first trimester and it commonly happened between the sixth to the seventh week.

These are the possible causes of bleeding during the first 12 weeks:

  • implantation bleeding
  • ectopic pregnancy
  • miscarriage
  • unknown causes

For the second trimester, the light bleeding could be because of irritation to the cervix or cervical polyp while heavy bleeding could be because of the following:

  • placenta previa
  • premature labor
  • late miscarriage

And during the third trimester, spotting may occur after intercourse or a cervical exam. As for cases having heavy bleeding, below are the possible causes:

  • placenta previa
  • placental abruption
  • vasa previa]
