NORMAL PULSE RATE – Here’s the meaning of heart rate or also known as pulse rate and what is the suggested rate or number that is considered normal.
According to the definition given by Harvard Health Publishing, the resting heart rate or RHR is “the number of heartbeats per minute while you’re at rest”. This is one easy way to determine the function of the heart muscle which only takes 30 seconds and uses two fingers.
How is this done?
Using your index and middle fingers, put it on your wrist where you can feel the pulse. You can also place it on the side of your neck – either side of it. Watch your pulse closely and count it for 30 seconds. You can also make it one minute.
Aside from the wrist and side of your neck, you can also check your pulse on the inner side of your elbow or base of the toe. Experts suggest checking your heart rate first thing in the morning and not after working out or after drinking a cup of coffee.
According to NIH, the following are the normal resting heart rates based on a person’s age:

With the given table above, if a person is over 10 years, a pulse rate of 78 falls under the normal level.
According to a post from Harvard, several factors can affect the pulse rate such as:
- certain medications like medicines for antidepressants and blood pressure
Other external or personal factors include humidity, obesity, age, gender, emotions, exercise, eating habits, and some medical conditions.
