What are the common causes of heart palpitation?

HEART PALPITATION – Doc Willie Ong shared to us the common causes of heart palpitation and what we should do to prevent suffering this.

A heart palpitation is a condition where the heart skipped beating or adding extra pound on chest which makes you feel like it is on a race. This is felt in the neck, throat, or chest. And most of it are harmless and can go away without any treatment but some cases, this indicates serious health conditions. Normal number of heartbeats is at 60 to 90 beats per minute.

According to Doc Willie Ong, here are the common causes:

  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Doing strenuous exercises which increases heart rate
  • Drinking coffee, tea, or energy drinks
  • Cigarette smoking because of the huge presence of nicotine
  • Pain or anger
  • Some medicines for cold or asthma
  • Several weight loss products

To prevent experiencing palpitations, the health expert gave tips which include slowing down and relaxing, reduce consumption of tea, coffee, or soda, and avoiding smoking and using of illegal drugs, try doing deep and slow breathing.

Meanwhile, there are serious causes of palpitation such as hyperthyroidism or heart rhythm abnormalities which are accordingly considered as medical emergencies.

Also, you should seek medical attention if your palpitation occur with other symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, fainting, difficulty in breathing, excessive sweating, pain, pressure, or tightening in chest, a resting pulse rate running at more than 100 beats per minute.

Heart is the organ to which its main function is to pump blood throughout the body as it supplies oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes. It is roughly similar to the size of the fist and weighs between about 10 to 12 ounces (280 to 340 grams) in men and 8 to 10 ounces (230 to 280 grams) in women as per Henry Gray’s “Anatomy of the Human Body.”
