A famous treatment for low blood pressure and dehydration is dextrose. It is also called glucose which is derived from corn. Apart from its many other uses in food and medicine, this is also used as a sweetener.

It is used for acute alcohol intoxication, sulfonylurea overdose, insulin overdose, high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), and insulin-induced hypoglycemia in pediatric patients. It is chemically similar to glucose and is also similar to fructose.

In medicine, this type of simple sugar is something that doctors use to treat low blood sugar which makes this a good source of energy, treats dehydration, and gives nutrition to patients combined with amino acids and other substances.

While there are a lot of benefits related to eating dextrose, there are also some risks associated with it. According to an article from WebMD, the following are the risks:

  • Weight gain – any unrequited sugar will be stored as fats inside the body.
  • Heart Disease – excessive consumption may lead to this serious medical condition.
  • Diabetes – dextrose is linked with obesity and increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Kidney Disease – the kidneys are the organs that filter the sugar out of our urine and an excessive amount of this may eventually cause a spike in your blood sugar levels.
  • Liver Disease – too much amount can result in the fatty buildup.
  • Insulin Resistance – being insulin resistant may make you suffer from symptoms like tiredness and this may also increase your risk of having other diseases.
