Halitosis or bad breath is characterized by an unpleasant odor of the mouth which is caused by foods a person eats, poor oral hygiene, diseases, or other factors. Symptoms include unpleasant or sour taste or changes in taste, dry mouth, a white coating on the tongue, dentures or braces, medications, pregnancy from morning sickness and vomiting, and among others.

Now, what to do treat and prevent halitosis? Here are some tips from doctors Willie Ong and Liza Ong:

  • Avoid spicy foods such as onions, garlic, spices, chives, and among others.
  • Drink calamansi juice or lemon juice to mask the smell of the mouth.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Drink a lot of water everyday.
  • Brush your teeth everyday twice or thrice a day.
  • Use floss to prevent decay which is one cause of bad breath.
  • Consult dentist for professional and proper treatments.

The American Dental Association recommends also to consume sugarless gum and sugar-free candy can also keep the mouth from drying out and over-the-counter mouthwash to help kill bad breath-causing bacteria and mask bad breath odors. However, a mouthwash could not treat its underlying causes.

Fail to brush and floss your teeth causes bad breath because food particle stay in between the teeth and inside your mouth that promote bacterial growth. Other dental causes could be poorly fitting dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and dental caries (cavities).
