ALCOHOL POISONING – How does binge drinking affect the health of a person or even put his or her life in danger?

Consuming alcohol may not be dangerous for as long as you consume the right amount. However, to some, they drink way to much to the point of binge drinking or consuming a huge amount in a short amount of time.

Alcohol Poisoning

For safety and for health, one must misusing alcohol and to know the bad effects it can do on your body and health. And below are the symptoms of alcohol poisoning:

  • confusion
  • severely slurred speech
  • loss of co-ordination
  • vomiting
  • irregular or slow breathing
  • pale or blue-tinged skin caused by low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • being conscious but unresponsive (stupor)
  • passing out and being unconscious

This is according to an article from NHS. And in severe cases, it can result to comatose, brain damage, and death. And if you suspect poisoning to a person you must do the following while help is not yet around:

  • keep him or her awake
  • give water if they can drink
  • if passed out, let them lie on their side in the recovery position and check their breathing
  • keep him or her warm
  • never leave him or her
  • never let him or her sleep
  • sober up by drinking coffee or cold shower

If a person is being poisoned by alcohol, the following can happen:

  • stop breathing
  • heart attack
  • choked by their own vomit causing death
  • severe dehydration which can cause brain damage in extreme cases
  • more severe hypothermia
  • seizures due to low blood sugar levels

Poisoning due to alcohol happens because consuming too much of this in just a short time will not give the body enough time to process it. The body can only process one unit in just an hour. The recommended unit for men and women is not to drink more than 14 units in a week.
