Atherosclerosis is the term called for blocked arteries and the buildup of plaque inside the artery is composed of various materials such as fibrous and fatty materials. This is also the underlying condition that causes coronary heart disease.

Blocked arteries can particularly occur in arteries that supply blood to the heart, the ones that supply blood to the brain, and those that supply blood to the legs or the peripheral. From chest pain, blocked arteries could cause worse like a heart attack or stroke.

Here are some foods that you should be eating in order to prevent this condition and other health complications that it may lead to:

  • Fatty fishes like salmon, sardines, anchovies, and mackerel – rich sources of omega-3 fats.
  • Flax seeds because they contain anti-inflammatory properties, fiber, and antioxidant lignans.
  • Berries like blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries for their quercetin and anthocyanins.
  • Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges. Apart from Vitamin C, they are also rich in flavanoids – a powerful antioxidant.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – the healthiest of all oils. This type of oil is packed with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyphenol antioxidant compounds.
  • Green tea has powerful antioxidants called catechins, which also has utterly great anti-inflammatory effects.
