Falafel – What Is Falafel and What Is The Recipe?

This is how you make falafel, a famous Middle Eastern cuisine.

FALAFEL – A delicious fried ball of chickpea and herb is all rolled into one called falafel and this is how this famous Middle Eastern dish is made.

Oftentimes, falafel is served in a pita or wrapped in a flatbread known as taboon. This Middle Eastern dish is famous and delicious that can be topped with salads, pickled vegetables, hot sauce, and drizzled with tahini-based sauces.

It is also a popular vegan food and although controversial, this food is said to have originated in Egypt. At present times, this is sold on streets in Egypt.

But this dish is just pretty simple.

Prepare the following ingredients below:

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Pepper, to taste, optional
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • Oil, for frying

Here are the steps:

  1. Soak your chickpeas overnight in cold water.
  2. Drain the chickpeas and place them in a pot. Pour some fresh water on it and bring it to a boil for five minutes. Be careful to not overcook. After five minutes of boiling, turn the heat low and let it simmer for an hour.
  3. After that, drain the chickpeas and let them cool down for 15 minutes.
  4. Prepare a large pot with a deep bottom and pour 2 inches of oil on it. Bring to a heat of 350 F.
  5. Combine the drained chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper, then add the flour.
  6. Mash the chickpeas until they create a fine consistency while you can have the other ingredients put in a food processor. Then, mix them all together. Make sure that the mixture is firm, if not, add more flour. You may also add one beaten egg to bind the ingredients.
  7. After this, manually create small balls from the mixture and flatten them slightly.
